10 Classic Albums That Artists Hated Recording

8. Definitely Maybe - Oasis

Oasis pretty much had the weight of the world on their shoulders before they even had an album out. Prior to them releasing Definitely Maybe, the Gallagher Brothers were already talking themselves up as one of the greatest bands to walk the Earth, so a lot was riding on making sure this album came correct. While we did eventually get there with songs like Live Forever, it did involve the album being recorded 3 separate times.

After getting signed to Creation Records, Noel Gallagher went through different locations to get the album done, with each of them sounding lifeless whenever they got the final masters. Even though the band took to hiring their sound man Mark Coyle for the production duties, it wasn’t until Owen Morris got ahold of the tapes that the whole thing started to take shape. Employing a new technique called brickwalling, Owen simulated what it was like to capture the band’s live sound on record, pushing the sound as far as it would go right before it bleeds into distortion and making Oasis sound much louder and bombastic than anything that was on the radio.

Morris also seemed to have a hand in making the songs the classics that we know today, like breaking up the guitar solo sections of the song Columbia to make it feel like you’re going on a journey instead of just hearing a wall of noise from start to finish. A good song might not need a bunch of glossy production for it to sound good, but it’s also kinda hard to listen to a version of Supersonic or Cigarettes and Alcohol that isn’t blowing out of your speakers.
