10 Classic Albums That Came Out Of Nowhere
6. The Slim Shady LP - Eminem
So many rappers have made their living based around how dangerous they claim to be as of late. No matter how much other fodder is at the helm, the only string to most emcee's bow at the start of their career is how they are either better at life than their contemporaries or have the potential to seriously injure them in their race to the top.
Granted, it wasn't until The Slim Shady LP where we got a rapper who felt like he was actually psychotic.
Despite having one of the more hubristic first singles imaginable with My Name Is, Eminem delivered on his trademark form of menace across every song on this album, detailing his life in Detroit and the unsavoury nature of his home life. As much as stuff like Rock Bottom and Role Model are far from being the most wholesome of messages in hip hop, the delivery is almost comedic, as if you're watching some sort of insanely dark cartoon show on Adult Swim.
These bars were dead serious though, with 97 Bonnie and Clyde being one of the most chilling songs he would ever compose, and My Name Is even earning Mr. Mathers a lawsuit for defamation from his mother. Compared to the legions of imitators Slim helped create, this is the ideal version of the antihero that we all really wanted to see.
