10 Classic Music Albums That Will Make You Love Nu Metal
4. Thirteenth Step - A Perfect Circle
One of the biggest common threads that unites all good nu metal is feelings of pain. As much as it might be for the wrong reasons sometimes, every single piece of nu metal's DNA has been tortured souls who never feel quite at home in their own skin. While some people just chalk it up to wanting to look different, A Perfect Circle gave us another argument with the effects of drugs on Thirteenth Step.
With the title being taken from the natural extension of AA's 12 step program, the entire album feels like a dissection of what makes an addict tick. Despite not being sedated, you can really feel the tortured mindset that happens when you're so dependent on one vice, either cowering to it on the song Weak and Powerless or realizing just how far gone you've become on a song like Gravity.
The album almost runs as a concept record of sorts, showing different sides of the addiction from other perspectives, whether it's dealing with someone overdosing on Blue or looking in on what an addict goes through on the Outsider. Then again, it's not fair to just point to this album as a means of showing what drugs can do to you. Everyone has their fair share of skeletons in their closet when it comes to addiction, and sometimes it takes the more tortured souls to actually show us what we've been hiding from ourselves for so long.
