9. Sea Change - Beck

Of all the descriptors that come with nailing down Beck's style, heartbreaking was not high on that list. Throughout the '90s, this was the kind of snarky slacker that seemed to go in whatever direction he wanted to, whether that be getting a little salty on tracks like Odelay or getting funky on his later work. When life gets in the way though, you sometimes need to pour your heart into your music.

Coming around the same time he started to contribute music to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Sea Change was a new skin for Beck, stepping into almost country and folk territory on this record. Since this was in the wake of a pretty major breakup, most of the lyrics are taken straight out of his broken heart, like the vulnerability of Guess I'm Doing Fine or Paper Tiger.

This was a bit of a family affair though, and part of the beauty behind this record is Beck's father, who contributed to the string arrangements on here. From the raw sound of Beck's voice, this seems like just the next record where he tries on his Hank Williams impression for a little bit. When you start to actually peel back the layers though, this is a completely different man than the one we met back on Loser. We're looking at a broken person trying to pick up the pieces of their shattered relationship.
