10 Classic Rock Albums That Were AHEAD OF THEIR TIME

1. Revolver - The Beatles

As soon as the Beatles decided to leave the road for good, they were about to embark on one of the greatest creative journeys of their career. Having just used the studio as their playground on Rubber Soul, the focus on their later work moved towards trying new recording techniques and pushing the boundaries of what a rock band was supposed to be. Rubber Soul was the proof of concept though...Revolver is where things started to pay off.

Without having to worry about making songs work for their audience, each one of these songs feels like a new creative endeavor, like Paul McCartney making a biting ballad like Eleanor Rigby or John Lennon crafting the world's very first acid rock song on the closer Tomorrow Never Knows. This album also marks the point where George Harrison starts to come into his own as a songwriter, from the cynicism of the opener Taxman to wearing his Indian influences on his sleeve on the song Love You To.

Even the more deep cuts on the record are much more accomplished than any other rock band could have hoped for, from the garage rock on acid sound of And Your Bird Can Sing or the switch up to Motown styles on Got To Get You Into My Life. This wasn't made in regards to deep cuts though. This is where the concept of the album became much more about having each song complimenting each other, and the rest of the rock scene quickly followed suit.
