10 Classic Rock Bands That Ripped Off Themselves
3. D'You Know What I Mean - Oasis
Ever since Oasis' '90s heyday, rock fans have done their due diligence wiping their hands of Be Here Now. As much as the songwriting may not have changed from the past few records, the overproduction of the entire record and the millions upon millions of guitar overdubs just made the entire thing feel a bit lackluster once you started listening to the songs. And we probably should have seen the burnout coming based on the first song that the Gallagher Brothers led off with.
Starting with the sounds of electronic noise and backwards vocals, this looks like Oasis are about to enter the next phase of their career, being much more bombastic than before. Once the guitars kick in though, the lightly strummed acoustic leads everything off with a chord progression that every open mic guitarist has engrained in our skull for years now.
For the most part, all of the chords for the verses are just the Wonderwall chords again, with Noel just putting different lyrics in place this time around and a melodic hook that isn't quite as hard hitting as what he did before. Compared to the melodic tendencies that he had at the time, D'You Know What I Mean just feels like the band were on autopilot through these sessions. We may have wanted a Wonderwall part two eventually, but this is the perfect case of being careful what you wish for.
