10 Classic Rock Songs That Were Made Out Of Spite
1. How Do You Sleep - John Lennon
For all of the peace and love that they talked about in the '60s, the Beatles' breakup wasn't really the most wholesome of fractures. Towards the end of their run, the Let It Be project was starting to turn these old friends and bandmates against each other, and eventually some shady business deals broke up the Lennon/McCartney partnership. Though it looked like Paul might have taken the high road, John wasn't about to roll over on How Do You Sleep.
Taking offense with one of McCartney's songs Too Many People, John wrote this song with the intention of dragging McCartney through the mud at every chance he could, with George Harrison actually playing guitar on the song no less. From one line to the next, you can hear Lennon seething with anger, talking about Yesterday being the only good thing that Paul ever wrote and most of his solo catalog just sounding like muzak to him.
At the time, there was even some playful jabs being hit here and there, with Yoko Ono contributing some lines to John before he sang them. Things did get a little bit out of hand though, and George Harrison ended up stepping in and telling John to tone it down just a little bit. From singing about how all you needed was love just a few years before, this song feels like it's taking place in a completely different universe than before. The song might still be great from a sonic standpoint, but if you're a Beatles fan, you can't help but listen to this track and not feel a little bit sad.
