10 Classic Rock Songs You Didn't Realize Were Incredibly Dark
8. End of the Century - Blur
There was a few years in the mid '90s where it really felt like the '60s came back for a little bit. With acts like Blur, Oasis and Pulp rising up the charts, this was the kind of music that the Beatles and Stones made popular back in the day that somehow got revived for a whole new generation. Oasis may have had the optimism of the Beatles at the best of times, but Damon Albarn was aiming more for a cynical version of the Kinks throughout most of Parklife.
While almost anything from that album could have fit in nicely with the rest of this list, End of the Century might be the clearest example of a song that is absolutely soul destroying if you don't hear it in the right context. For most of the song, the band are mining a traditional old school Brit rock groove that wouldn't feel that out of place in the days of the Animals, but Damon's lyrics are about how modern life is getting too boring to even take seriously anymore, with people going about their daily routines and being almost subservient to what they see on TV.
Kissing with dry lips at the end of the night, this is the picture of what Blur were seeing at the time, people with seemingly no problems at all driving themselves mad when they have nothing to do. That's just scratching the surface of the kind of characters here though, like Tracy Jacks going berzerk and bulldozing his house just one song before in the track listing. The end of the century might be on its way, but if you take it from them, it's certainly nothing special.
