10 Classic Songs About How The Music Industry Sucks

1. In Bloom - Nirvana

Kurt Cobain never wanted to be in the biggest rock band in the world. Nirvana were looking to play to some of the best crowds that would have them, but something started shifting once Nevermind took them into the stratosphere. Cobain was preparing for this kind of mess though, and made one of his biggest hits about making fun of the wannabes.

Although In Bloom might be one of the best singles Nirvana ever had, every lyric in this song has to do with the people who jump on the grunge bandwagon without actually living it. In the wake of Smells Like Teen Spirit taking over the world, Nirvana started seeing a lot of jocks at their concert, and this song was aimed squarely at the fans that claim to be the biggest fans without actually analyzing the lyrics. Being no fan of toxic masculinity, Cobain talks about the archetypal meat head that he thinks would like his music, thinking that he caters to the pretty songs as he goes out and shoots his guns with his friends but doesn’t realize that the song is about him.

There’s a lot of contempt in Cobain’s voice, but there’s also a touch of humor, as he’s looking to tear down this guy for having the guts to sing along to a song about how much he’s a piece of s**t. There’s no rhyme or reason to what gets on the radio, but this might be one of the first iconic songs that’s actively encouraging some people not to listen to it.
