10 Classic Songs About How The Music Industry Sucks
7. Death on Two Legs - Queen
Every up and coming band should really pay attention to the contracts they sign. Even though you might want to start recording as soon as possible, the people behind the scenes are going to want to take you for all you’re worth and keep all the royalties for themselves. After Queen found themselves in a bad deal though, their first song afterward was about confronting their former business partners.
Although Freddie Mercury is known for his campy demeanor, there’s a lot of raw anger on this song, written in response to the people who hadn’t paid him after the single Killer Queen began to blow up. Even though the tune has an energetic feel to it, Mercury is seething with anger, asking if stabbing the band in the back was part of the original deal they signed and comparing their old dealers to sewer rats and that they could kiss their ass goodbye once all was said and done.
While the higher ups may have been delighted to hear themselves torn through the mud, Queen was only getting stronger from here, making Bohemian Rhapsody on the back half of the album and giving the world some of the most bombastic rock and roll ever recorded. Queen have only grown stronger since working out their deals, but when they do want to get nasty, they still manage to do it with class.
