10 Classic Songs That Weren't Supposed To Be Hits

7. First Date - Blink-182

At the start of 2001, it seemed that Blink-182 couldn't really lose. After coming off of the massive success of the album Enema of the State, this pop punk trio actually thought that they had an album worthy enough to top it with Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. While they were right, the actual record executives had other plans when it came down to the singles.

Not thinking that the guys had anything marketable enough for mass consumption, Blink's record company actually sent the record back and told them to work on it some more.

In a fit of rage, both Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus set about writing the poppiest songs they knew how just to spite their critics. Looking to make some of the cheesiest lyrics imaginable, First Date was originally written as a bit of doofy humor meant to stir up some sh*t with the label at the time.

Instead, the actual executives saw dollar signs, eventually rush releasing it as a single before the album dropped later in the year. It's not like the higher-ups were wrong though, with this being one of the best Blink songs there is, from the sunshiny melody to the care-free attitude that reeks of adolescence.

Though the intention might have been to annoy, sometimes it takes that kind of frustration to reach true brilliance.
