10 Classic Songs That Weren't Supposed To Be Hits

5. ALL of the Blue Album - Weezer

When stacked up against the more depressing alt-rock of the mid '90s, the Blue Album by Weezer should really be a hits-fest from cover to cover. With the exception of the lengthy Only in Dreams, there's the potential for hits pretty much everywhere on this record, from the '50s homage on Buddy Holly to the experience of an opening track in My Name is Jonas. It's a shame that the band themselves didn't think so though.

As these nerd rockers went in to record the record with the Cars' Ric Ocasek, no one really had a clear idea as to what the lead single was supposed to be. Rather than focus on an actual commercial product, most of the time was spent pounding away until they eventually handed the record into their label to do what they wanted with it.

What no one could have predicted though was that nearly half of the album would reach the charts in some capacity.

Compared to the last waves of grunge on the airwaves, songs like Buddy Holly and Undone (The Sweater Song) were a lot more accessible for your average pop fan to get into, albeit with some more morose subject matter than you might expect. Given that these guys had no real faith in this thing blowing up, it goes to show that sometimes it's better once you hand the album into your record label.
