8. James Hetfield Nearly Burned Alive

Metal as a genre has always been known for musicians that like to go a bit more extreme than their counterparts. Compared to what you'd see out of the likes of the Rolling Stones or the Beatles in the early days, you wouldn't see a band like Black Sabbath catering to the teen pop demographic anytime soon. No, the power behind these songs felt like life or death...but it didn't need to get that drastic on the live stage.

During Metallica's epic run through of dates in support of the Black Album, James Hetfield was badly burned when the band pulled into Montreal. As he opened the song Fade to Black, James has explained that he got confused as to where he was supposed to stand, not knowing that he had just hovered over a canister that would shoot up a chemical flame.

After being lit up, James was absolutely horrified as to how he would even perform again, with half of his skin rising off of his body in blister. Though the show had to be cancelled to rush James to the hospital, he was determined to not let his injury defeat him, taking to the stage in a brace and bandages while roadie John Marshall was brought in to play the guitar parts. As much flak as Metallica gets for being sellouts, not many other bands are willing to go above and beyond for their fans like this.
