https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojasq626CgQ If you were to just listen to the light guitar picking and concentrate on the lilting vocals of lead singer Claudio Sanchez, then "Wake Up" would feel like an uncharacteristically schmaltzy ballad by a typically-aggressive prog-rock band. But even a cursory glance at the lyrics reminds you that, oh yeah, this is the same band that wrote a song about "a whore in sheep's clothing" who Claudio wants to legitimately crucify. So, naturally, this ballad uses some of that same intensely menacing imagery:
Ill do anything for you Kill anyone for you
It's not exactly subtle. And although there's something weirdly romantic about promising to murder someone (anyone) for your true love, that's normally just an overly dramatic declaration of devotion. But Coheed doesn't just pledge their murderous intentions, they actually follow through before the song is over:
So leave yourself intact 'Cause I WON'T be coming back
Why isn't he coming back all of a sudden? Simple: That dude's off to kill a motherf--ker for his lover. So...not just an empty promise. Take that, Bruno Mars.
