10 Darkest Hard Rock Albums Ever Made
3. In Utero - Nirvana
Any band worth it's salt would have been elated to make a record that had half of the cultural significance as Nevermind. Although Nirvana could have never predicted it, their unique brand of alternative rock blew up on the charts and left the rest of the hard rock community in the dust, paving the way for the alt-rock explosion further down the line. Kurt Cobain wasn't all that happy though. In fact, on In Utero, he was downright pissed.
Being one of the most caustic records to ever find its way onto the charts, In Utero is Cobain lashing out at every single person who wants a piece of him, from the tabloid circus following him around to the scourges that he still finds in society on tracks like Rape Me and Serve the Servants. Never one to play up his rock star tendencies, songs like Scentless Apprentice and Milk It are dark snapshots of Kurt losing his mind, trying desperately to make the music he wants to make regardless of whether or not there is a market for it.
While there's a lot of anger here, no one could have imagined that all of it would be directed inward just a year later, with Cobain being found dead in his home of an apparent suicide. This isn't just a collection of songs...this is Cobain on a soapbox nullifying the rest of his life going forward.
