10 Darkest Hard Rock Songs Of All Time

1. The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails

If you take anything away from this list, it's that the '90s were a prime time for some dark stuff to grace the charts every once in a while. Along with the grunge rock that was coming down the pipeline, you also had thrash hitting its peak around the same time and the emergence of more flamboyant stars like Marilyn Manson a few years later. For the all time darkness though, you were going to have to get a little more mechanical in nature.

After bearing his soul on the entire album of the Downward Spiral, the title track shows Trent Reznor putting some of his darkest ideas into one place. I'll remind you that this is also the album that has songs like March of the Pigs and Closer on it, and yet this song outshines them all for being absolutely warped from the very beginning.

Since the rest of the album has been about Mr. Self Destruct taking his anger out on everyone around him, this is where he projects everything inward and attempts to commit suicide. Along with the lower vocals in the mix, the faint screaming from Reznor just adds another psychotic layer to a man who was pretty unhinged to begin with. Considering this is one of the final parts of the record, it's a miracle that we got something like Hurt to wrap everything up. When you go through something as pitch black as this, you're going to need some sort of pick me up.
