10 Darkest Hard Rock Songs Of All Time
4. One - Metallica
During Metallica's prime, chances are you could throw a dart at any of their songs and land on something that was slightly off-putting. I mean, the entire track list of Master of Puppets alone is pretty much a study in the kind of darkness that anyone could fall into from time to time. When it came time for them to make their first music video though, the thrash legends certainly gave MTV something to remember with One.
Taken from the book and movie Johnny Got His Gun, this entire song plays out from the perspective of a soldier who lost all of his motor functions after being the victim of a landmine going off. Not being able to see, hear, or even speak, all we hear is this man's thoughts, as he tries desperately to cope with the pain that he's feeling every day.
Yeah, so just in case you guys weren't already bummed at this point, the whole thing gets a lot more scary once the drums kick in and James Hetfield's riff locks into the groove. This is where you start to realize that this guy is completely trapped inside of his own mind and won't be able to tell anyone to kill him. For all of the warped tales about the devil in the metal genre, being trapped inside your head and endlessly tortured until your death is probably a whole alternate level of Hell.
