10 Darkest Rock Albums Of The 90s

8. Insomniac - Green Day

There aren't that many Green Day songs from the '90s that you could really call dark or dangerous in any capacity. Even when they tried to be edgy on Dookie with songs like Having a Blast, those songs were more about teenage punk attitude than anything that was legitimately dangerous. Once the band got a cold shoulder from their fanbase for going pop though, they came back to the studio ready to bring out the big guns.

Of all of the Green Day projects of their bratty period, there's no letting up when it comes to Insomniac, taking the sounds of Dookie and dialing up the intensity that much more, looking at the more hairy situations that punks of their age normally find themselves in. Compared to the adolescent kind of rage on their last record, there's some legitimate fire under these songs, almost as if they're using every chance they have to give a middle finger to anyone who ever doubted their punk credibility.

When they're not tearing through some of their competition on songs like Brat and 86, they're making some pretty intense songs about what their daily situations are like, from capturing the feeling of an anxiety attack on Panic Song and looking at the wonders of trying crystal meth on Geek Stink Breath. There may have still been some catchy songs, but in terms of raw punk attitude, this is about as no BS as it gets from Green Day. You get in, you slap the audience around for a little bit, and then get out before they even know what hit them.
