10 Darkest Rock Albums Of The 90s

4. Bloody Kisses - Type O Negative

By the time we reached the mid '90s, we had more than a few options as to where dark music was headed. Though the beast known as alternative rock was still dominating the charts, a little upstart genre known as nu metal was also steadily becoming one of the biggest things in music, with bands like Korn paving the way for the more tortured side of rock. Whereas most bands would scream out in anguish, it takes the true metalheads to tap into real pain.

Despite the strange gothic cover art, Type O Negative made one of their first masterpieces on Bloody Kisses, with songs like Christian Woman sounding like they're taking place on a dark and stormy night in some medieval tower. All of the elements are in place for a dark record...and then you get to Peter Steele's voice.

Compared to the screamers that would just shred their throat night after night, Steele managed to capture darkness by just being one of the lowest singers in metal. The kind of ominous energy that you get from hearing these songs is something you're either born with or you're not, and Peter has definitely given us a reason to be afraid on a few of these tracks. If vampires were to actually exist in this world, this is most likely the music used to conjure them.
