3. Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town - Kenny Rogers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1e9p6J89rQ "And if I could move I'd get my gun and put her in the ground. Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town" Kenny Rogers sings this depressing little ditty about a man who is paralysed after taking part in "that old crazy Asian war". The song was written in 1967, so it's very probable that he is referring to Vietnam. His wife tarts herself up every night and goes out on the town and the man is scared she will "take her love to town" as he cannot sexually satisfy her, this leads to murderous feelings in the man as you can see from the above line of the song. I love Kenny Rogers and I love this song. It was hugely successful upon its release - reaching number 2 in the charts in the UK and number 6 in the Billboard Top 100. It had sold a million copies by the end of the year. Numerous musicians have covered the song including artists as diverse as Waylon Jennings and The Killers. French, German and Czech versions of the song have been recorded as well as an Answer Song called Billy, I've Got to Go To Town was recorded by Geraldine Stevens in which 'Ruby' affirms her love for 'Billy' and assures him she is being faithful. One of the best known country music songs (sure aren't they all depressing anyway?) Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town has been bewitching people with its tragic tale of a crippled war veteran and his floozy wife for over 40 years now. The song was a country hit for Johnny Darrell in 1967 but Kenny's version is the best, his voice just sounds totally heartbroken. Kenny owns that song.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
