10 Dumbest Decisions Rock Bands Have Ever Made
1. Metallica's Rogue Snare
Anyone who has been close to the world of metal in the past decade has had their fair share of laughs over St. Anger. Despite having some of the more humorous memes come out of the production and the accompanying documentary Some Kind of Monster, the only reason metalheads are laughing is to keep themselves from crying about the dissolution of one of thrash's greatest bands. If there was one thing that we could have done without though, it was using a trash can for your percussion setup.
Throughout the documentary, you could tell that Metallica were looking to find a different sound, in what could have possibly been their answer to the nu metal sound making waves around the same time. Although the detuned guitars and lack of solos were definitely unique for the time, Lars Ulrich made the cardinal sin when he decided to unhook the snare extension of his snare drum.
With one of the most dead sounds in the history of music, every track on St. Anger suffers for this one bad decision, almost sounding like you're being beaten over the head to the rhythm of the song every time it comes on. Even though nothing could have saved St. Anger from mediocrity at this stage, this was the icing on the sh*t sundae to come from one of the greatest to ever pick up guitars.
