10 Dumbest Decisions Rock Bands Have Ever Made
7. Motley Crue Firing Vince Neil
The hair metal movement of the mid '80s wasn't all that concerned with blowing people's minds from an instrumental standpoint. There's even the old adage that the guys from Poison were all drafted from a modeling agency rather than actually forming as a group of musicians. While some of these acts may have looked like cartoon characters, Motley Crue forgot the one rule of hair metal: Never Break Up the Family.
After making the biggest statement of their career with Dr. Feelgood, the Crue were riding high only to get into petty band drama when they returned home from the tour. With tensions boiling over since the era of Shout at the Devil, Vince Neil got into a spat with Nikki Sixx and abruptly left the band, or quit depending on who's story you believe from this era.
Even though Vince's nasally hair metal voice was never the greatest in the hair metal genre, the magic was clearly gone once they got John Corabi in to replace him. Although clearly the better singer, Corabi's gravelly register just didn't fit in with the Crue's sound, evident by producer Bob Rock's shock when they actually came into the studio to record. It just goes to show you that while some singers might not be the best from a technical standpoint, it's more about how they sound with the band than their actual vocal range.
