10 Essential Glam Rock Albums

7. Suzi Quatro - Suzi Quatro

Suzi Quatro got her solo career off to a sensational start with this self titled debut, a fun filled whirlwind tour of rock ‘n’ roll history filtered through the glossy but rebellious sheen of the early ‘70s. At 23 she had been recording music for 7 years, but this was her first chance at the limelight as an individual.

Opener “48 Crash” emphasises Quatro’s garage rock roots - it’s a raw throated stomper that gets the record off to an aggressive start. She shows off her four string skills on shuffling blues number “Get Back Mama”, and ups the party vibes with the singalong “Glycerine Queen”.

Her boldest move is her winningness to tackle rock ‘n’ roll’s sacred cows. On the first side she takes on “I Wanna Be Your Man” - a classic rock twofer, written by Lennon and McCartney, recorded by The Rolling Stones. In a rare move for the era she doesn’t flip the gender, but more than does the song justice.

Better still is her version of “All Shook Up”, which received praise from Elvis himself per Quatro. Adding keyboards and a jolting beat, she makes the song her own while retaining the cheekiness and charm of Presley’s rendition.
