10 Essential Rock Albums Of The 2010s
6. Warmduscher - Whale City
This band's name translates to 'warm showerer'. Meaning someone who takes warm showers. Which apparently means a wimp? We feel it's necessary you know this so you have a decent idea of just how weird Warmduscher and, by extension, this album are before you dive right in.
Warmduscher is the bastard child of post-punk bands Paranoid London and Fat White Family, and if you're familiar with either of those bands then you probably have a good idea of the kind of weird territory we're headed in. Although their debut album Khaki Tears was a solid enough record Whale City is where they truly came into their own.
This is some of the grimiest, dirtiest punk to come along for a while, but with a hefty dose of disco and funk thrown in for good measure. It's reminiscent of Ian Dury, The Stooges and The Stranglers at their best, and the minimal aesthetic is testament to the fact that less is often much, much more.
We recommend strapping some headphones on before you walk out the front door, turning the volume right up and putting on I Got Friends. Do that and tell us you don't feel like you're about to take over the world.
