10 Essential Songs To Get You Into Alter Bridge

3. Words Darker Than Their Wings

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc0xQStQxfc For fans of: Analysing poignant, poetic lyrics. Only released initially in a 48-hour window to promote the third album AB III, Words Darker would actually end up closing out the original pressing of the album, but over time it's become known by fans as an incredibly well thought-out comment on the nature of believing in a higher power than ourselves. Born from a conversation between Myles and Mark, alternate verse vocals are handled by each singer respectively, with Myles taking up the mantle of the non-believer against Tremonti's more hopeful descriptions of their being a possibility of something on the other side. The really fantastic thing is upon first listen it's easy to imagine it's about a failed relationship, but what really cements the conceptual nature of the piece is when they admit in the chorus nothing is certain until they head "Into the light", where they'll "know truth alone." Coming at the end of AB III and concluding the story of our hero who throughout the album has been struggling to find a reason to carry on, the notion and power of faith alongside a higher power is a theme few songwriters can ever do justice, but here it's one of their finest efforts to date.
