10 Essential Thrash Metal Bands You Need To Listen To

7. Paradox

Like a monster out of mythology, Paradox have the head of a power metal band and the body of a thrash metal contingent.

Another export from the Teutonic scene, Paradox have frequently proven themselves to be one of thrash's most ambitious and genre-redefining acts. A key aspect of this group that sets them apart from their contemporaries are the remarkably clean and concise vocals from longtime frontman Charly Steinhauer. In a world of screams, growls and grunts, his more conservative approach to singing stands out clear as day.

Better still are the melodic, complicated guitar riffs and solos on display throughout the group's high concept early work. Look no further than 1989's 'Heresy', a blistering, daring epic focused on the Albigensian Crusade. The blend of story-focused lyrics with their hard-hitting hybrid of thrash, power and even speed metal makes for a crisp and immersive long form concept album.

While some may argue the group peaked right there, particularly with killer tracks like '700 Years On' and 'The Burning' , they have a respectable wealth of additional imaginative thrash madness on offer. Still going strong in the '20s, Paradox unveiled a long-awaited sequel to 'Heresy' aptly titled 'Heresy II -End of a Legend' last year. Simply one of Germany's finest metal exports.
