10 Even More Underrated Red Hot Chili Peppers Tracks
9. The Brothers Cup (1985)
When George Clinton is in anyway involved in making a song you better believe it's gonna be one funky mother funker. Having one of the pioneers of psychedelic funk at the engineering helm, this track had all the groove you would expect.
It contained some of Hillel Slovak tightest guitar playing and was far more reserved than what was usual for him at the time. Some well placed horn sections resulted in a funk grove that was enough to inspire a boogie from even the most reserved individuals.
The vocal delivery is far more reminiscent of something you'd expect from Grandmaster Flash rather than a rock act, but this was a staple of the band's early sound. Kiedis was far more comfortable expressing himself through rap rather than singing in those days, it was all about being loud, brash and unapologetic.
Not only is this a great jam but it's an interesting way of gauging just how much the bands sound has developed over the years. You can hear elements of this sound in their more recent records but this was when they could have happily transitioned into a straight funk act.
