10 Extreme Rock Albums That Will Blow Your Mind
5. The Residents - The King And Eye
A shoo-in for this list, this fantastic album by one of the most influential, obscure bands of the last fifty years, The King And Eye is actually a triple play on words. The Eye part is a reference to the 'giant eyeball' head-masks which The Residents habitually wore during the early part of their career (the band remain anonymous to this day).
The King in question is none other than Elvis Presley whose songs, interspersed with original narration, make up this set. The King And Eye, of course, can also be taken as a pun on the classic musical, The King And I.
So what is the music like? The Residents (the name derives from a rejection letter sent from Warner Bros, addressed simply to 'the residents') since day one, have always strayed far from the obvious.
Equally, they are always capable of casting out melodic hooks and sincere emotion, albeit largely stripped of sentimentality. These re-workings pay homage to Elvis, but are strikingly inventive pieces which transform the originals into something darker and less commercial.
Those with an
open ear will find much to enjoy.
