10 Famous Rock Songs That Were Almost Called Something Else
4. Dream Theater's Pull Me Under - Almost Called “Oliver’s Twist”
For those who like their music complex, their themes grand, and their songs really, really long, there are few better bands out there than Dream Theater.
Champions of the prog metal genre, this Long Island, New York-founded outfit have been wowing their devoted fanbase since their first album back in 1989. Three years later, they followed up with Images and Words, a record that contained what would become their signature song.
Pull Me Under, despite its gargantuan length, became somewhat of an MTV mainstay in its prime. This led to the band including it on a compilation album called Greatest Hit (...And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs), which is superb.
Considering that the song's lyrics allude to the Shakespeare tragedy Hamlet, you might expect its working title to reference the Danish play in some way. Instead, it calls on another literary staple, as this was originally called Oliver's Twist.
This Dickensian title was given to the song in its early form, before it had lyrics. Demo versions carrying this name can be found online, in case you wanted any "More" of this great tune.
Get it? "More"? Like in Oliver Twist?
Oh, forget it.
