10 Fascinating Backstories Behind Famous Rock Band's Names

4. A Spark Of Inspiration - AC/DC

One of the most kick-ass, hard-rocking, noise-generating rock bands to ever duck walk across a stage got their name from a very banal place.

AC/DC were formed in Australia by Scottish-born brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, who were the only two constant members prior to Malcolm's death in 2017. Since their first gig in 1973, many others have come and gone from the group, including original lead singer Bon Scott, long-time vocalist Brian Johnson, and, weirdly enough, Axl Rose.

The name of the band came from none of those people, instead being a brainwave from yet another member of the Young family. Sister Margaret was looking at a sewing machine one day when she noticed a switch that swapped the device between alternative current and direct current electricity.

It was labelled "AC/DC", although there was no lightning bolt at the time.

Margaret, who also suggested that Angus wear a schoolboy outfit on stage, presented the name to her brothers, who felt it perfectly matched the "high voltage" nature of their act.

Going by Margaret Horsburgh in later life, she passed away in 2019, having left a subtle, yet important impact on the musical world.
