10 Fascinating Covers Of Led Zeppelin Classics
9. Tomoyasu Hotei- Immigrant Song
Legendary Japanese guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei guides Led Zeppelin into his distinctive rock-futurist landscape with this memorable tribute. Hotei's music mixes a retro-'80s sheen with elements of electronica, but at heart he is all about the electric guitar, the more bombastic the better.
Hotei's cover of Immigrant Song makes for a perfect example of everything the artist does well. A raw-edged belter soaring over a neon landscape, Hotei adds machine-engineered sleekness to the original's muscle and drive. It should come as no surprise to learn that Hotei's music is inextricably linked both with video games (see Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny) and movie soundtracks. Hotei's Battle Without Honor Or Humanity memorably features in Tarantino's Kill Bill and the Transformers franchise.
Led Zeppelin first unveiled this beast of a song on 1970s Led Zeppelin III. It was composed while on tour in Iceland, which explains the lyrical references to Norse mythology and "the land of ice and snow." Immigrant Song also introduced the world to a phrase which has since become synonymous with the band itself: "hammer of the gods," which also serves as the title to Stephen Davis' wonderful biography of the group.
