10 Forgotten David Bowie Gems

8. New Angels of Promise (1999)

http://youtu.be/XMmTtjflKCM From Hours..., an album on which Bowie appeared to grapple with his mortality. If that album's been forgotten in favour of the more glittering sections of his back catalogue, fewer still will remember that quite a few of the tracks made their debut in a curious graphic adventure game for the PC and Dreamcast entitled The Nomad Soul. It was New Angels of Promise that played over the game's opening credits. And trust me, you've never really heard this song unless you've seen it accompanied by a swift pan through a futuristic cyberpunk city rendered in what was, at the time, cutting edge computer graphics. In the same game, you can also see this and a few other songs from Hours... performed by an underground rock band called The Dreamers. But shorn of that digital connection, New Angels of Promise still impresses as a fine example of bombastic art rock for the new brave new millennium.
