10 Forgotten David Bowie Gems

5. The Bewlay Brothers (1971)

http://youtu.be/8a82arE0JSQ A strong contender for my favourite Bowie song of all time, this closes Hunky Dory in a fashion that's at once baffling and devastating. Have I any idea what it's about? Not really, but that's not the point. This is stream-of-consciousness surrealist poetry that's designed to fuel dreams and imagination, and it works. It really works. The keening spectral guitar that accompanies the strummed 12-string chords during the chorus evokes a perfect night sky, and it's just gorgeous. The Bewlay Brothers appear to have travelled to the moon, but its the final rude shift back into mundane reality that creates the strongest impression. I haven't got a clue where the sudden demands for gravy come from, but please stop it, David. You're scaring us. The closing cries of €œI might just slip away€, though, are strangely affecting €“ even if they are delivered in that unusual voice.
