10 Good Songs That Were Made AMAZING By Their Music Video
4. Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
Ever since Peter Gabriel left Genesis in the mid-70's, he had been known as one of the most eccentric voices coming out of the prog rock scene. With each passing release, he seemed to be pushing his music forward into unchartered territory, but the grand pop success still eluded him. Then everything changed once we entered the world of stop motion.
Gabriel's song "Sledgehammer" was already a gritty piece of R&B, but the charm behind the video made it irresistible for the common pop audience. This little production incorporated everything great, zany, and weird about Gabriel's music, from his claymation self turning his hands into sledgehammers to a break of dancing headless chickens. Given the more serious tone of his previous output, this was the first time fans got a peek into Gabriel's unique sense of humor.
Thanks to this one video, Gabriel's album So went rocketing up the charts, which yielded even bigger hits like the tearjerker "In Your Eyes" and the equally as funky "Big Time." Aside from the music, the video opened up the possibilities for what videos could be like going forward. While Genesis were still thriving with Phil Collins at the helm, "Sledgehammer" was proof that Gabriel could hold his own even without his bandmates.
