10 Good Songs That Were Made AMAZING By Their Music Video
2. This Is America - Childish Gambino
Ever since the rise of streaming, an artist's success didn't have to rely on the popularity of a music video anymore. With meme culture and viral marketing taking over the Internet, you needed to have much more than just a couple of dancers to get people to pay attention. In this tough age for the music video, Childish Gambino came through with a mini epic that captivated the music world.
Removed from the music video, "This Is America" is a caustic indictment of American practices, from the treatment of African Americans to the oppressive life of those in poverty. It definitely makes you think, but the vision Donald Glover had in mind was beyond just a catchy tune. The video is an absolute marvel to behold, with bold dance moves from Glover interwoven with graphic imagery of people getting killed. There are so many little idiosyncrasies in the video it's easy to miss them, from the Confederate soldier pants Glover is wearing to the way he preciously takes care of his firearm like you would a newborn child.
"This is America" may not have been what we expected from Childish Gambino, but Donald Glover's creative vision gave us all something we didn't know we needed.
