10 Great Guitarists In Terrible Bands

7. Dave Matthews

There's a lot of contentious elements that come with Dave Matthews' music. While his band can certainly play their ass off, the entire jam band scene and the plodding nature of most of his songs have turned off many potential fans during his glory years. As sleepy as his songs may sound at times, Matthews' prowess behind the fretboard ends up shining brighter than most of the songs he's playing.

For as generic as ballads like "Crash Into Me" may feel at times, the guitar work brings every song to a different sonic plain, with Matthews picking out just the right notes to make the song sound complete. Take a song like "Satellite" from the start of his career. From a musical standpoint, there doesn't seem to be too much to get worked up about, but when guitarists actually sit down to play it, they start to realize just how intricate some of these acoustic jams might be.

All of these songs are made that much more impressive once you realize that Matthews often juggles these guitar lines while switching time signatures and singing at the same time. Every bro who has ever pulled out a guitar around a campfire probably worships at the altar of Dave Matthews, but there may indeed be some divine intervention happening in between those sappy ballads.
