10 Great Obscure Post-Rock Bands

7. Geneva

Cerebral and artistic, graced by the haunting lead vocals of Andrew Montgomery, Scottish band Geneva are among the many talented outfits who have never received the acclaim which they deserve. Formed in Aberdeen, in 1992, the group's initial line-up comprised Montgomery plus Steven Dora and Stuart Evans on guitars, bassist Keith Graham and drummer Craig Brown (later replaced by Douglas Caskie.)

They were good enough for a demo tape to get noticed by Nude Records (home of Suede), and caught enough press attention for NME to signal Geneva as an up-and-coming band to watch, inviting the group to headline their Brat Bus tour.

Geneva's debut, 1997's Further, made it into the UK album charts, with four singles from the record reaching the Top 40. Disagreements between the band and their label led to a delay in follow-up album, Weather Underground, which was eventually released in 2000. That same year the band split, but a recently re-united Geneva, minus Stuart Evans, are currently enjoying their “second life.”

Every scrap of music from this superb group is worth seeking out.
