10 Great Obscure Post-Rock Bands

5. Antethic

Formed in 2012, this instrumental trio from Saint Petersburg, Russia make for an intriguing prospect. Alexander Lyvov, Yuri Efremov, and Konstantin Borisov fuse electronica with traditional rock sounds. They sit firmly within the post-rock landscape, with multi-layered guitars, droning synths, loops and sequencers, but take a lateral approach, with an impressive range and variety of compositions.

The band put out two excellent Eps, The Rules of Discoverers Wishful to be Unknown, in 2012, and The City of the Sun, 2013, before releasing a full-length debut, Origin, the following year. Two further albums have followed, 2017's fantastically-named Ghost Shirt Society, and 2020's Mythographer. Alongside these sit a generous amount of B-Sides and remixes, all of which are worth tracking down.

Their sound is nothing if not striking, effortlessly moving from monumental slabs of interstellar sound to thumping electronica and a bit of everything in-between. What ties this all together is Antethic's fine melodic sensibility, married to an unashamed taste for the dramatic.

It's all beautifully packaged and put together. With Antethic, you're guaranteed an emotional, affecting journey, and it's one which comes highly recommended.
