10 Great Obscure Post-Rock Bands

4. The Ascent Of Everest

Monumental, martial, and that over-used word, cinematic, all do a fine job of conveying what The Ascent of Everest are about. You could also add slow-burning, thoughtful, introspective and dramatic. Nashville, Tennessee, might be more readily identified with country music, but it's there that you'll discover this ambitious outfit.

The Ascent of Everest are: Devin Lamp on guitar and vocals, Keller McDivitt, guitar, Drew Binkley, bass, Casey Kaufman, cello, strings, Dillon Smith, violin, strings, Chris Click on piano and Michael Thurmon on drums, and percussion. Note the unusual (for any rock group) inclusion of strings and piano, which should tell you much about the band's feel and direction.

There's clearly an enduring audience for this brand of passionate, almost-orchestral strand of post-rock, and little wonder. There isn't much finer than hearing the drive and power of a guitars-and-drums set-up married to sophisticated strings and immersive soundscapes.

The Ascent of Everest pull off this difficult trick very well indeed, as we are sure you'll agree.
