10 Great Obscure Post-Rock Bands

2. This Is Your Captain Speaking

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, three-piece This Is Your Captain Speaking gained enough attention and acclaim from their self-released debut album, 2005's Storyboard, to land a deal with the now sadly defunct UK label, Resonant Records. Storyboard was an ambitious affair, running to 66 minutes, with the tracks recorded live in, of all places, a primary school library.

Two follow-ups surfaced, 2008's Eternal Return and 2013's Arc, since when the band seem to have been on something of a hiatus – a great shame as the music contained on this three releases is certainly deserving of a wider audience.

Quite beautiful layers of guitar, washes of drums and compositions which rise and fall like mighty oceans form the group's sound, and there's much here to enjoy. They can be propulsive when they want to, or equally slow and majestic. Whatever approach the band takes, however, there is always a fine sense of purpose to their material, which never crosses the line to become meandering.

Arc, in particular, contains some true gems, though everything This Is Your Captain Speaking lay down is worthy of your time.
