10 Great Rock Albums Recorded In Really Weird Ways

5. Chris Hadfield - Space Sessions: Songs From A Tin Can

Whilst many artists have recorded albums in unique places in order to mix things up or find something that inspires them, none will reach the literal heights that former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has. During his mission to and from the International Space Station, Hadfield wrote and recorded humanity’s first ever off-planet record with Space Sessions: Songs from a Tin Can.

Hadfield hadn’t really planned for such a thing but upon discovering that there was an acoustic guitar on the ISS, the spaceman decided to spend his evenings with the instrument and soon enough found inspiration through his very unique experience. With his surroundings hardly outfitted for music production Hadfield recorded himself whilst floating in a space barely wider then he was, singing and playing into an iPad.

The album consists of 11 original songs of acoustic rock, bolstered by some additional recordings on Earth. It ends in Hadfield’s cover of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, of which the astronaut released a music video containing stunning views from his outer-planet living quarters. This cover went viral on YouTube in 2013 and currently has over 51 million views.
