6. Talk Tonight - Oasis

Oasis' catalogue of Britpop bops are so often echoed around clubs and bars around the country, but in a bid to break into the American market, the band toured the west coast somewhat extensively. Tensions rose (as expected), and Noel inexplicably flew to San Francisco to be with a girl he'd met on tour, which inspired the heart-shattering and profoundly moody Talk Tonight.

Talk Tonight is one of the few songs that elevated Noel's imperfect, raspy vocal notes. It's simplicity in production and hollow, almost haunting guitar melody fused wonderfully to bring a deep, melancholic twist to the band's tried-and-tested formula of tightly wound vocals, grungy riffs and unpredictable stage presence.

The tune was rendered nothing more than a B-side for the band's first UK Number 1 Some Might Say. It is included in The Masterplan --a compilation of B sides released in 1998-- but with a song as beautiful as Talk Tonight, room should have been made on any number of their subsequent releases.

Sure, Oasis never hit the heights they'd reached in the UK across the pond, but returning to the shores of England with a masterpiece like Talk Tonight was so worth the plane ticket.
