10 Great Songs Never Released As Singles

6. Dumb - Nirvana

Compared to Nirvana's commercial masterpiece Nevermind, In Utero stands as a slightly harsher listen. With distorted headtrips like "Scentless Apprentice" and "Milk It," this album was much more raw than what Nirvana fans had anticipated. While the sonics and distortion are a bit biting on this record, that doesn't necessarily mean that the tunes are any less beautiful. Case and point: "Dumb."

This track is the most pop-centric song to be found on In Utero, with a melody that is so simple it could be taught to schoolchildren. The lyrics though are a frank look at Kurt Cobain's depression, as the singer combs through his psyche and finds that he only ends up feeling dumb whenever he wants to feel happiness. The mournful cello on the track helps paint the portrait of Cobain's inner melancholy.

The production of the song puts the listener in a somewhat sedated feel, as if this song is being played while you're floating on a cloud coming back down to Earth. Amidst the harshness surrounding it, "Dumb" stands as one of the most subtle songs that Nirvana would ever write, but also one of the most gripping.
