10 Greatest Acoustic Rock Albums
2. Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Drake’s first two albums were primarily stripped back, though with the occasional explosion of horns and strings, particularly on sophomore effort Bryter Layter. On his swan song, Drake took his fragile, sorrowful sound down to the bone, with just guitar, occasional piano, and his weary voice.
That’s not to say Pink Moon is a miserable listen, though; indeed it’s often beautiful. The title track shows off Drake’s range, as he floats over the verses then sinks breathily into the chorus. “Which Will” is lyrically heartbreaking but features some of his finest guitar work to date.
It’s often a haunting record, too. “Know” stands out for its buzzing guitar and Drake’s wordless humming, which finally gives way to a brief, despondent lyric. Indeed Drake’s words become less comprehensible as the record goes on, and it’s hard not to hear this as an insight into the artist’s mental state.
Drake passed away two years after Pink Moon’s release. His final album ends on the delicate “From The Morning”, a light and lovely conclusion to his arguable masterpiece.
