10 Greatest Animated Music Videos Of All Time

1. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

Though it might look a bit dated now, the music video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Califnornication – taken from the 1999 album of the same title – has a pervasive uniqueness and enjoyability that makes it appealing to this very day.

The video was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valeria Faris, and is basically a fictional 3D video game which features each of the various band members. The game appears similar in game play to the likes of Grand Theft Auto, allowing the characters to snowboard, swim, drive around, fight various wild animals and generally just experience a massive open world environment.

The scenes are so fast paced and varied that it's impossible to really know what's coming next, which makes it incredibly entertaining to watch. Aside from various references to other video game franchises, occasionally the video and lyrics will match up, too, which is a lot of fun. Ultimately, however, what makes the video so great is its density – no matter how many times you watch it there always seems to be some other small detail to notice.
