10 Greatest Anti-Love Songs In Rock Music History
9. A Woman In Love - Tom Petty
If there's anything that you can call Tom Petty's music, it would be sincere. Even though there have been a few peaks and valleys here and there, every single thing that the original heartland rocker touches is always going to come somewhere from his heart and soul. When he's in love, you feel it, and when he's jaded, you feel that too.
Being the antithesis to songs like Here Comes My Girl from around the same time, A Woman In Love is a lot more dark and dour, down to the fact that the entire music video is made in black and white. From the looks of the lyrics though, it looks like Tom has been on the wrong end of an unfaithful partner, and is trying to mull it over in his head about what's going to happen next.
That's not to say that their split can't be smooth (hell, Tom's written the song Walls about that exact feeling), it's just that he knows what road she's going down. As much as she might be attracted to another flame more than Tom, he's been through enough to know that she's going to wind up with her heart in a million pieces in her suitor's hands. Tom can try to save her, but from the looks of the ending, we're going to let fate decide this one.
