10 Greatest Band Rivalries In Rock History
7. The Smiths vs. The Cure
By the mid-80's, the post-punk scene was not lacking in depressing music. With each passing day, another band was coming to the forefront with a cold melody and even colder lyrics about everything from angst-ridden love to the inevitability of death. Though the Cure and the Smiths thrived in this scene, the context was a lot messier behind the scenes.
The feud mostly started when Morrissey was interviewed regarding his feelings on certain artists. Never one to mince words, the Smiths frontman said that he would be happy to see Robert Smith dead and called the Cure's musical ventures "a new dimension to the word crap." While Smith took the entire thing in stride at first, he stood up for himself once he was called a "fat clown in makeup."
Once he cleared up the fact that he had never even met Morrissey, Smith expressed that he absolutely loathed his "critic's" behavior. Calling out Morrissey's infatuation with the vegetarian lifestyle, Smith said that he would deliberately eat meat every time Morrissey mentioned his animal rights stance. Given all the vitriol they spew out in the press, it's no wonder that each of these bands have put out so much dark material in their songs.
