10 Greatest Bands Who Mixed Music Genres
7. Paramore
They’re one of the last bands standing from the emo boom of the mid ‘00s, and for good reason: Paramore are one of the few bands of that era who refused to stand still and continued to mix things up rather than remaining trapped in the delayed adolescence of some of their contemporaries. Through a willingness to embrace different genres and - horror of horrors - slick, radio friendly pop, they’ve gone from strength to strength.
Their first album, when they were mere nippers, is straight ahead emo/pop punk of a ‘90s vintage. There are great tunes, like “Emergency”, but the album is of a piece.
They kicked on with Riot!, featuring hard rocking favourite “Misery Business”, contemporary indie in “Fences”, and U2-esque stadium rock on “When It Rains”. But their biggest reinvention was still to come - 2017’s After Laughter saw the band fully embrace modern pop.
For some bands this would seem like selling out, but Paramore’s music has always been current and youth-oriented; calculated or otherwise, this was a smart stylistic shift that fans old and new seem fully on board with.
