10 Greatest Classic Rock Songs Of The 1980s
6. Born In The USA - Bruce Springsteen
When people bring up the 80's era of rock and roll, more often than not they talk about the ridiculous fashions coming out of sunny California. At the same time, some of the best tunes of the day were songs that sounded like they came straight out of the heartland.
With the 80's in full swing, Bruce Springsteen was already a superstar after his untouchable work in the previous decade. After the success of Born to Run, The Boss was one of the premier voices in rock and roll whose way with words was unlike anything anybody had ever heard. So how would this wordsmith find his way into the mainstream in the era of neon-colored spectacles? Simple: going back to 'Born.'
It may have looked cheap that Springsteen's next smash "Born In the USA" shared title similarities with his biggest hit, but this track had a different story to tell. Instead of mere flag waving, this tune was vicious in talking about the lives of Vietnam veterans who have come home to a country and society that they don't recognize. Whereas "Born to Run" was a hopeful look towards escape, this was the time when you become lost in the wilderness with your back against the wall. It may not be the cheeriest of Springsteen's songs, but the poignancy of this tune will hit anyone who's ever felt like they're on a road to nowhere.
