10 Greatest Debut Albums Of The 1970s

5. Queen - Queen

Anyone who has ever been aware of modern music is bound to have heard Queen at least once in their life. No matter what stripe of music fan you are, you have all either clapped along to "We Will Rock You" or banged your head to "Bohemian Rhapsody" in one form or another. Though the band are known for their more operatic works, their debut proved they were no slouch even in their infancy.

From the opening notes of "Keep Yourself Alive," the signature Queen sound is already present, with the wall of guitars complimented by the unmistakable vocals of Freddie Mercury. Though Mercury receives all the acclaim for his contributions, the rest of the band hold their own when coming up with great tunes, from Brian May's elegant "Doing All Right" to the adrenaline blast of Roger Taylor's "Modern Times Rock and Roll."

Long before the band conceived "Bohemian Rhapsody," songs like "Great King Rat" and "Jesus" show the more extravagant and progressive elements of their sound coming to the forefront. This album was a far cry from being one of Queen's masterpieces, but this was the rock world's first offering from a band who were destined to become musical gods.
